Tempered Glass
Tempered glass, also known as toughened safety glass, is defined as glass that has been heat treated to provide four times the strength and durability of standard annealed glass. Another name for this type of glass is "tempered glass". The heat treatment of hardened tempered glass makes it heat resistant. It breaks down into small, safe pieces rather than large ones, making it ideal for many DIY projects and where standard glass can be a hazard.
At North Glass, we've perfected the process of making tempered glass pieces by hand. The first thing you should know is that your toughened glass is cut to the right size. In fact, we will cut, polish and buff your glass to your specifications before tempering. Cutting tempered glass after tempering is not recommended as it tends to break. After your glass is cut, we put it into our own tempering furnace so we know how your glass is treated from start to finish. After your glass comes out of our tempering furnace, we cool it under high pressure to complete the process. Federal regulations require tempered glass to have a surface compression of 10,000 psi or higher. It usually breaks at around 24,000 psi.
You can customise the size, shape, thickness and edge type of the glass.
You can also choose bronze or grey tempered glass when customising your glass.
You can choose to have your glass with or without a tempered seal (a seal that certifies that your glass has been tempered).
